FIFA 17 is different but whether it’s better or not is subjective

Ask any football fan what their favorite soccer game is, the answer will most probably be Electronic Arts Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EA) FIFA. Since its inception back in 1993 the FIFA video game series has become a juggernaut, and is released every year with something new added to its gameplay, online gaming, career mode, etc. Now this brings us to our concern: whether or not releasing a new edition every year gives the game enough space to develop? Its gameplay without a doubt has remarkably improved over the years, but is it really the progress it deserves?

The game’s latest installment, FIFA 17 comes with a story mode; something not new to NBA gamers as EA had already introduced it a couple of years back for its fans of basketball video games. Now keeping the story mode aside, what’s so different about gameplay in the latest FIFA compared to its predecessor? And is it better?

FIFA 17 is different, but the question whether it’s better or not, is subjective. Gaming analysts at The Country Caller found the game to be more difficult than the previous iterations, with the players responding to your actions in a split second; we believe that the developers have made it a bit tricky to make a perfect finish in FIFA 17, but the aforesaid analysis was only carried out for world class difficulty level, so there is that.

We believe EA is trying to make FIFA as realistic as possible with players making mistakes and mishandling the ball, making errors while passing or simply their first touch letting them down. Now, for some these changes may make the game more engaging, but for majority it could be annoying since pro gamers who are not committing mistakes are still being punished on the same grounds as those who are newbies.

One major issue with FIFA 17 is the referee’s sense of own goal. It almost feels as if the EA forgot what constitutes an own goal. When a shot is on target and the ball ends up at the back of the net even after deflection, it’s considered a goal for the player. On the other hand, if it wasn’t on target and then ends up in the net after deflection, that’s counted as an own goal.

All in all, we are not entirely convinced whether the series is moving in the right direction, but then again as long as they keep introducing changes then the sales numbers would speak for themselves.
