See the evolution of FIFA graphics over the past 15 years

EA Sports' FIFA 17 hits stores on Tuesday, offering soccer fans an updated installment of the popular video game franchise. The series has made significant and impressive strides over the years, so let's take a look at the game's progression over the past decade and a half.

FIFA 2003

FIFA 2003 is the 10th game in the series and the first to introduce a TV style broadcast, as well as "Freestyle Control," which allowed players to perform creative ball maneuvers on the run.

FIFA 2004

This installment introduced teams from secondary divisions as well as "off the ball" tactical control.

FIFA 2005

The final edition to be released for PlayStation, FIFA 2005 brought back the create-a-player feature and offered a 15-year career mode to users. The series also extended to handheld/mobile platforms, such as Playstation Portable, Gameboy Advance and mobile phones.

FIFA 06 featured a complete overhaul of the game's engine to give gamers more control over play. Clive Tyldesley and Andy Gray were also introduced as the commentary team.

This was the first title to be released on Xbox 360, which offered improved graphics and physics exclusively.

Both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 offered a "next-gen" experience that brought improved graphics and gameplay, as well as a new commentary team of Martin Tyler and Andy Gray. It also introduced "Be A Pro" mode and an improved trick stick.

Gameplay improvements include a revamped collision system, better goalkeeper mechanics, and weather/time changes.

FIFA 10 has a revamped "Manager Mode" that allows players to take even deeper control of their favorite teams. The game also brings a "Virtual Pro" mode and introduces Ultimate Team.

This edition saw a series of tweaks and improvements to gameplay and game modes. "Be A Pro" and "Manager Mode" are merged into a central "Career Mode."

Gameplay improvements in FIFA 12 surrounded the game's Impact Engine, Tactical Defending, and Precision Dribbling. Improvements were also made to Career Mode and various online modes.

FIFA 13 offered First Touch Control to players and integrated support for Kinect and PlayStation Move.

A launch title for PlayStation 4, FIFA 14 was also the last title to be released for PlayStation 2 and Playstation Portable. It also introduced the new Ignite engine that offered more realistic physics, motion and environments.

Xbox One got in on the action with FIFA 15, which is the first release in series history to be fully licensed by the Premier League. That meant all 20 EPL stadiums were included in the game, as well as authentic EPL broadcast graphics, chants and more.

FIFA 16 was the first in the series to include women, as the game finally offered gamers the option of playing as women's national teams. The game also featured additional enhancements and a new broadcast duo of Martin Tyler and Alan Smith.

FIFA 17 incorporates the Frostbite engine, which helps with new attacking techniques, physical player overhaul, an active intelligence system and improved set pieces. The game also introduces a new mode titled "The Journey," which features a single-player campaign in which users take control of an up-and-coming EPL star.
